💶 Spain’s Temporary Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes (ITSGF)

The Temporary Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes (Impuesto Temporal de Solidaridad de las Grandes Fortunas) is a state-level levy designed to ensure that taxpayers with very high net worth contribute to public finances, particularly in regions where the Autonomous Community (CC. AA.) has eliminated the regional Wealth Tax (WT).

The application of this tax is temporary and remains in force until there is a comprehensive review of the regional financing system’s wealth taxation.

💎 Scope and Taxable Base for Residents

For individuals who are tax residents in Spain, the ITSGF applies under the Personal Obligation rule.

🧮 How the Solidarity Tax is Calculated

The ITSGF uses a progressive scale and is calculated after factoring in a national exempt minimum and deducting the amount already paid for the regional Wealth Tax.

1. Progressive Tax Rates

The tax rates are applied to the Taxable Base (the net worth that exceeds the €3,000,000 limit).

Taxable Base (Base Liquidable)Applicable Rate (Tipo Aplicable)
Up to €3,000,0000.0%
From €3,000,000 to €5,347,998.031.7%
From €5,347,998.03 to €10,695,996.062.1%
Above €10,695,996.063.5%

2. The Deduction for Wealth Tax (WT) Paid

The most critical feature of the ITSGF is that it allows the taxpayer to deduct the amount already paid for the regional Wealth Tax (WT) in their Autonomous Community.

  • Result: The ITSGF only applies as a “top-up” amount in regions where the regional WT tax due is less than the calculated ITSGF amount. This ensures that regions like Andalusia or Madrid, which offer a 100% tax bonus on the WT, still generate some tax revenue from their wealthiest residents.

📅 Filing Requirements (Modelo 718)

Filing for the Solidarity Tax is directly linked to the obligation to file the regional Wealth Tax (Modelo 714).

Who Must File?Individuals subject to the regional Wealth Tax (WT) must file an ITSGF declaration if the resulting tax rate is payable (i.e., the ITSGF amount is higher than the regional WT paid).

Calculation of the Temporary Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes

We inform you how to calculate the amount of this tax when it is necessary for the purposes of completing the Wealth Tax.

In cases where, in order to calculate the regional tax credit for the Wealth Tax, it is necessary to include the Temporary Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes in the tax return (Autonomous Communities of Andalusia, Galicia, Madrid, and Cantabria), a version of the assistance program for Form 718 for the 2024 fiscal year called “Form 718 2024 Open Simulator” has been enabled.
